Metanoia: Of innocence and experience
People come to our lives and take their leave at some point; some leave behind engraved footprints in our territory, some are gone with the wind without a trace. Some leave with a fanfare; some leave without a slight sound. The opposite of innocence is not naughtiness; it is experience plain and simple. Experience is a funny word because most attach it to their stupid mistakes, recklessness and irresponsibility. Experience kills the most beautiful and pure sentiment humankind has ever known: innocence. The death of innocence is a prelude to mischief, ruthlessness, apathy, and the birth of a brute heart. Such transition into experience is necessary, however, because all of us taste the same medicine. It’s a matter of survival. Remaining innocent equals to sheer naivety. And a naïve heart is bound to be broken —rather pulverized. Innocence is pure; experienced is tainted. One strives to rejuvenate that purity but the cost is too high to justify it.
